Allow Modules to have "nicknames" in the control panel.

In addition to showing channel numbers, a "Nickname" field per module address would be very usefull in large shows that have dozens of modules. Nicknames should be up to the user, but they could be used to identify location, size, effect, etc. For example: "4" left side" or "waterfall-downstage" , or whatever. As a programmer, I have most of the channels memorized and I know what is what, but when things get busy 2 minutes before a show and we have an issue, having more information is always better.

I agree.

It would be nice for those of us that use Excel to script if there was a way to add it in control panel. I know that it would be difficult to adapt a way to add the names directly from the script "csv" file, but it would be nice if it were possible.

We are looking to add Finale 3D (and show creator) position data to control panel in the coming months. Would this fit the bill? Or would there still be a desire to nickname modules?

Zach Gilbert if the Fianle 3D position names could be used, that would be step in the right direction. As you know, there can be several modules in a single position, so to have a unique module name for every module you would have to have a seperate position for every module. If the .csv file had a column that allowed a name for each module that would be managable. I see a potential for a conflict though, because a user could assign more than one name to a given module and that would raise an error somewhere.
Thought for a temporary solution: What if the Control Panel gave you the ability to edit the module name on the control panel (internally) and left the csv file alone? Just a thought. Also - see my other comment in regards to naming scriipts.

Jim Acker: Some good points here for sure. Thanks Jim!
